When it comes to getting a place in France, everyone has different criteria. In the words of the Spice girls, you have to ask yourself “What do you really, really want?” I had long been in love with the Cote d’Azur and spent many happy holidays there, from Villefranche and Beaulieu sur Mer, near the border with Monte Carlo, to Frejus and St Tropez on the opposite end. You name it, Antibes, Juan les Pins, Golfe Juan, St. Raphael, Antheor, Nice, Cannes, and even the countryside in Provence, I’ve stayed there and enjoyed them all. But my favourite place of all, was Theoule-sur-Mer.
BEST of BOTH WORLDS The area known as the Riviera (the Cote D’Azur) spans two départments. The Alpes Maritimes is the area around Nice and Cannes, which has, in my opinion, been overdeveloped with too many high rise apartments, but has the advantage of being very convenient to Nice airport. The Var, by contrast is much greener, much more of a nature-lover’s paradise, but can be a bit more difficult to access except by car. Théoule-sur-Mer is in on the border between these two departements. You have the best of both worlds, close to the buzz and glamour of Cannes and Nice airport, and yet with easy access to the mountains and the forests, and of course the sea. - Margaret
